Damn binaries

Oh no.

This is the actual guideline page; this an excellent commentary. Basically, clinicians are still recommending surgery for female infants with ‘severe virilisation.’ Why? While severe forms of CAH can be dangerous, the actual external appearance of the genitalia is hurting no-one.

I realise that perhaps later in life, ambiguous genitalia could cause problems for the individual in today’s incredibly binary society. But the solution is not to butcher children’s genitalia at birth, possibly leaving them with a lack of sensation, among other effects. If, as an informed adult, the person wishes surgery to ‘normalise’ their genitalia, that’s fine. That’s allowing them to have the choice. Doing the surgeries at birth is denying people their bodily autonomy, with potentially disastrous consequences.

Intersex people (CAH or any other ‘condition’) are just another manifestation of the glorious variety of human life. There is no excuse for treating them as abnormal, as unnatural, and operating to enforce a socially-constructed binary on them. That’s plain barbarism.
