New signs

On my way through the city centre, I saw two signs that said this;

BEGGING IS ILLEGAL
THINK
BEFORE YOU GIVE

First thought was, ‘this cannot be serious.’ But they weren’t hastily posted paper things – proper signs, I forget whether they had the council logo on them. Just – what? Criminalising people for daring to be human while poor and homeless? And putting up signs encouraging people to suppress their altruism…

This isn’t a new thing in the world. It’s just the first time I, as a privileged person along this axis (as always, if I say something breathtakingly privileged, I welcome criticism), have come across this particular brand of shit IRL.

It wasn’t a coincidence that the signs were in an area where homeless people do go – because it’s under cover, easily accessible and it rains a lot here. The thing is, as far as I know, there’s not a lot of actual begging going on; mostly just homeless, cold human beings trying to get out of the rain for a bit. So what is this other than a clear ‘get out of here, you’re near the bus station and you’re making us look bad’?
